If there’s one thing I’ve learned after photographing weddings for years, it’s that you can spend months planning every little detail, but Mother Nature is still going to do whatever she wants. JoJo and Sean’s Vandy Hall wedding was one of those days. After 14 years together, they had imagined spending hours outside soaking in the beautiful lakeside setting. They both love the outdoors, which is one of the biggest reasons they chose Vandy Hall in the first place. It’s surrounded by nature and exactly the kind of place where you can picture yourself celebrating with your favorite people. Unfortunately, the weather had a different vision for the day. But thankfully, rain doesn’t get the final vote!

Why They Chose Vandy Hall

JoJo and Sean have always loved being outdoors, so when they started looking at venues, they knew they wanted somewhere that didn’t feel stuffy or overly formal. They wanted to be able to look out at the water, spend time outside with their friends and family, and have the kind of wedding that felt relaxed from beginning to end. For JoJo and Sean, it checked every box!

When the Rain Changes the Plan

I know rain can feel like the absolute worst thing that could happen on your wedding day. Trust me… I get it. You’ve spent months picturing your ceremony outside, imagining portraits by the lake, and then you wake up to dark clouds. But what I always tell my couples is that we don’t need perfect weather to create beautiful photographs. We simply need to stay flexible.

Instead of forcing outdoor portraits, we embraced what the day was giving us and moved JoJo and Sean’s first look and portraits indoors. Without rushing from one location to another, they were able to slow down, enjoy being together, and simply soak in the fact that after fourteen years together, they were finally getting married. Just after the ceremony, the rain finally started to let up. We were able to head outside during cocktail hour, and JoJo and Sean finally got the lakeside portraits they’d been hoping for all along.

A Cocktail Hour Nobody Will Forget

Sean is an avid Steel Fighter, so instead of sticking with a completely traditional cocktail hour, several of his best friends traveled in to perform a live steel fighting demonstration for their guests. How cool is that? This is exactly why I love when couples stop worrying about what’s “normal” and start asking themselves what actually feels like them. Those personal touches are what make a wedding unforgettable because they’re a reflection of who you are.

The Best Weddings Feel Like You

Looking back at JoJo and Sean’s Vandy Hall wedding, I don’t think of the rain first. Sure, the rain changed their plans. But it didn’t change the way they looked at each other during their first look. It didn’t change the excitement of finally saying “I do” after 14 years together. And it definitely didn’t stop their guests from having an unforgettable time (I mean… there was a steel fighting demonstration during cocktail hour!).
